Module 4: Technical Analysis & Charting MechanicsIntermediate 15 Min

Lesson 10: 4.9: Fibonacci Retracements, Extensions & Golden Ratio

Apply mathematical ratios to price action, identifying structural retracement zones and target extensions.

1. The Mathematics of Fibonacci

Fibonacci levels are derived from the mathematical sequence where each number is the sum of the preceding two. Ratios like 38.2%, 50%, and 61.8% (the Golden Ratio) are projected onto charts to identify retracement pullback targets.

In a strong uptrend, pullbacks to the 50% or 61.8% Fibonacci zone are highly watched by computerized algorithms and manual traders alike, acting as self-fulfilling areas of buyer interest.

★ Fibonacci Rule: Use Fibonacci Extensions (like 1.618) to project potential profit-taking targets in price discovery.

A swing from 100 to 120 and a pullback to 110 with Fibonacci levels at 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and a 161.8% extension
Example swing: low 100, high 120, then a pullback to 110. Swing range = 20, so the 61.8% pullback = 120 − 0.618 × 20 = 107.64, the 38.2% pullback = 112.36, and the 50% level = 110.00 (a common charting convention, not a Fibonacci ratio). The 161.8% extension shown here is measured from the swing low: 100 + 1.618 × 20 = 132.36. Other tools use three anchors, so always check your platform's convention. These are reference areas: price does not have to react at any of them, and the chart does not show price reaching 132.36. Illustrative data.
