Lesson 7: 4.6: Trend Strength Indicators: MACD and ADX
Analyze moving average convergence divergence (MACD) and the average directional index (ADX) to gauge trend strength.
1. Measuring Trend Strength
The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) calculates the difference between two EMAs (typically 12 and 26) and plots a Signal Line (9 EMA) to identify momentum crossovers.
The ADX (Average Directional Index) focuses strictly on trend strength, ranging from 0 to 100. It does not indicate direction, only intensity: ADX values above 25 indicate a strong trending environment, while values below 20 signal range-bound markets.
★ Trading Tip: Avoid using pure oscillators like Stochastic during high-ADX trends, as they lead to premature contrarian entries.
