Lesson 9: 3.8: Limit Order Book Modeling & Queue Position
Understand mathematical modeling of order arrivals, cancellations, and queue probability estimation.
1. Stochastic Modeling of the LOB
Quantitative researchers model the limit order book as a system of queues. Order arrivals (market, limit) and cancellations are modeled as Poisson processes or Hawkes self-exciting point processes.
Estimating your probability of execution depends on your exact depth in the queue. If your limit order sits behind 50,000 shares, and the market fills only 10,000 before reversing, your fill probability is zero.
★ Quantitative Concept: Cancel-to-Fill Ratio is a critical indicator of queue stability and genuine liquidity depth.

The Gamma Exposure (GEX) profile dictates the hedging loops of market-makers. Slide the price pointer below to see how institutional hedging flows suppress volatility or trigger cascading market trends.
Price Controller
Gamma Transition Zone (Near $100): Resting near the Volatility Flip Line. Dealer hedging is transitioning, making the price range choppy as dealer flows oscillate. Expect choppy intraday price ranges.
KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE
Why do quants model order arrivals using Hawkes processes rather than standard Poisson processes?
