Module 3: Order Flow & Liquidity DynamicsAdvanced 20 Min

Lesson 8: 3.7: High-Frequency Trading (HFT) and Microstructure

Examine high-frequency quoting, co-location, rebate arbitrage, and flash crashes.

1. The HFT Landscape

High-Frequency Trading (HFT) utilizes ultra-low-latency infrastructure, sub-millisecond networks, and custom hardware (FPGAs) to trade at speed. HFT algorithms compete for queue position and rapid execution.

Strategies include market making, latency arbitrage (exploiting microsecond price differences across different cities), and maker-taker rebate capture.

★ System Risk: System cross-interactions and structural feedback loops can cause momentary liquidity vacuums, triggering Flash Crashes.

Follow the arrows: Market data → Fast quoting → Queue competition → Fills / cancels → Liquidity changes. A diagram of the mechanism. It does not claim that all HFT causes crashes, or that it provides stable liquidity.

KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE

Q01.

What is latency arbitrage?

Signal Desk is where you practice this on real stocks: real option chains (about 15 minutes delayed), the Trade Check and a paper-trading account that risks no real money. Join to add it, your progress tracking and PDF downloads.
