Lesson 4: 3.3: Order Flow Imbalance (OFI) & Price Discovery
Analyze how inequalities between buying and selling volumes shift order book states and dictate price changes.
1. Quantifying Order Flow Imbalance
Order Flow Imbalance (OFI) measures the net flow of aggressive market orders relative to limit changes. If aggressive buying volume heavily outweighs selling volume, the best ask is depleted and price is forced to tick upward.
Conversely, heavy aggressive selling depletes the best bid, forcing price downward. Real-time discovery is driven by this constant friction between eager takers and patient makers.
★ Key Metric: High net positive OFI is historically correlated with immediate, positive short-term price moves.
