Lesson 7: 3.6: Dark Pools and Block Trading Execution
Deconstruct non-displayed liquidity pools, matching logic, and how institutions execute large blocks off-exchange.
1. Inside Dark Pools
Dark pools are alternative trading systems (ATS) that do not display their limit order books to the public. Orders match invisibly, typically at the midpoint of the public Best Bid and Offer (NBBO).
This structure allows institutions to trade massive blocks of shares without leaking their intentions to predatory high-frequency algorithms, avoiding unfavorable pre-execution price movements.
★ Regulatory Detail: Dark pools must still report completed trades to the consolidated tape within seconds of execution.

Volume profile plots the cumulative volume traded at specific price levels, revealing the Point of Control (POC - price of highest volume) and the Value Area (where 70% of transactions occur).
