Lesson 7: 10.6: Initiative vs. Responsive Activity

Differentiate between initiative trades that break ranges and responsive trades that buy cheap prices.

1. Responsive Trading Activity

Responsive activity occurs when participants respond to attractive prices relative to established value. It represents mean-reverting behavior:

• Responsive Buying: Occurs when price drops below VAL (cheap) and buyers step in to auction price back to the POC.

• Responsive Selling: Occurs when price rallies above VAH (expensive) and sellers step in to auction price down to the POC.

★ Trading Edge: Fading range extremes (selling VAH, buying VAL) is trading responsively, which is highly profitable in balanced markets.

2. Initiative Trading Activity

Initiative activity occurs when participants actively initiate a move to break out of the range, buying at high prices or selling at low prices because they expect a massive structural shift.

Initiative buying breaks above VAH and holds, proving that buyers are comfortable buying at premium prices because they expect value to shift higher.

Two paths from the same prior high at 104: a close above it that holds, and a wick above it that closes back inside
Two paths from the same setup, with a prior high at 104. Left: price closes at 105 and holds above it, initiative activity that moves beyond the old range. Right: price pokes up to 106 but closes at 103.6, back inside, responsive activity. These are observed examples, not entries and not predictions.
