Module 9: Market StructureAdvanced 15 Min

Lesson 6: 9.5: Internal vs External Structure

Map the relationship between swing legs (external structure) and sub-trends (internal structure).

1. The Structural Hierarchy

To master market structure, you must recognize that different structures coexist simultaneously on the same chart. We categorize these into External and Internal structures:

• External Structure: The major swing points and trend legs on the higher timeframe (e.g., 4-Hour or Daily chart). It represents the macro-narrative.

• Internal Structure: The minor swing points and trends that develop within a single higher timeframe leg (e.g., 15-minute chart). It represents the micro-execution environment.

★ Core Insight: Price is often in a bearish internal retracement while maintaining a highly bullish external structure.

2. Achieving Multi-Timeframe Alignment

High-probability entries are found by aligning internal and external structures. When price is retracing in a bullish daily trend, the 15-minute structure will be bearish.

By waiting for the 15-minute internal structure to shift bullish (via a CHoCH) in alignment with the daily external uptrend, you capture an entry at the absolute low of the retracement.

A rising move made of external legs with a smaller internal pullback highlighted that stays above the previous external low
Internal versus external structure. The larger rising move (external structure, with pivot lows at 102, 104 and 106) contains smaller pullbacks (internal structure). The highlighted internal pullback stays above the previous external low of 104. Lining up timeframes helps you read the picture, but it cannot promise to catch the exact low of a pullback.

KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE

Q01.

How should a professional trader handle a bearish 15-minute trend when the daily trend is strongly bullish?

Signal Desk is where you practice this on real stocks: real option chains (about 15 minutes delayed), the Trade Check and a paper-trading account that risks no real money. Join to add it, your progress tracking and PDF downloads.
