Lesson 4: 9.3: Change of Character (CHoCH)
Spot early trend reversal signals using Change of Character mechanics at structural key levels.
1. Reversal Mechanics (CHoCH)
A Change of Character (CHoCH) is the first structural signal that a trend is reversing. It represents a fundamental shift in market control from buyers to sellers, or vice-versa.
• Bearish CHoCH: In an uptrend, price fails to hold the last valid Higher Low and closes below it, shifting control to the sellers.
• Bullish CHoCH: In a downtrend, price fails to respect the last valid Lower High and closes above it, shifting control to the buyers.
2. Distinguishing CHoCH from BOS
While a BOS represents trend continuation (breaking the swing high in an uptrend), a CHoCH represents trend transition (breaking the opposite swing low).
CHoCH typically occurs when price reaches major daily or weekly support/resistance levels, signaling that higher timeframe players are stepping in to reverse the market.
