Module 9: Market StructureBeginner 15 Min

Lesson 2: 9.1: Swing Highs & Swing Lows

Master the precise definition of structural swing points and how to identify valid pivots on any timeframe.

1. Defining a True Swing Point

To establish a rule-based approach, we cannot rely on subjective visual assessments. A true swing point must meet a strict geometric criteria based on surrounding price action.

• Swing High: A candle high that is flanked by at least two candles on the left and two candles on the right with lower highs.

• Swing Low: A candle low that is flanked by at least two candles on the left and two candles on the right with higher lows.

★ Drawing Rule: Always use the candle wicks when identifying swing highs and lows, as they represent the absolute limits of price delivery.

2. Identifying Valid Pivots

Not all peaks and valleys on a chart are structural pivots. True structural pivots are formed when price reverses enough to create a clear expansion away from the pivot point.

If price merely moves sideways or forms small, tightly clustered candles, it represents minor sub-structure or consolidation rather than a major swing point.

A swing high at 110 and a swing low at 99, each with two candles on both sides
A swing high and a swing low, using a rule of two candles on each side. Left: the high of 110 is above the highs of the two candles before it (105, 107) and the two after it (109, 107). Right: the low of 99 is below the lows on each side (103, 101, 100, 101). Two candles each side is one common convention, not the only definition, and a pivot is only confirmed once the candles on its right exist.
