Lesson 1: 14.1: Microsecond Hardware, FPGAs & Kernel Bypass
Examine ultra-low latency hardware stacks, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), custom NICs, and C++ memory tuning.
1. Bypassing Operating System Latency
Standard operating systems (like Linux) introduce microsecond-level delays due to context switches, interrupt handling, and kernel network stacks. HFT systems bypass the OS entirely.
Using Kernel-Bypass network interface cards (NICs), incoming market data packets travel directly from the network card into user-space application memory without passing through the operating system kernel.
★ Hardware Logic: Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) process incoming market feeds and trigger order responses directly on silicon circuits in sub-microsecond timescales.
2. C++ & Memory Optimization
HFT software engines are written in heavily optimized C/C++. Developers design algorithms with zero dynamic memory allocations during runtime, lock-free ring buffers, and custom cache-line alignments to prevent CPU cache misses.

The Gamma Exposure (GEX) profile dictates the hedging loops of market-makers. Slide the price pointer below to see how institutional hedging flows suppress volatility or trigger cascading market trends.
Price Controller
Gamma Transition Zone (Near $100): Resting near the Volatility Flip Line. Dealer hedging is transitioning, making the price range choppy as dealer flows oscillate. Expect choppy intraday price ranges.
