Module 12: Order FlowAdvanced 15 Min

Lesson 0: 12.0: Introduction to Order Flow

Understand the microstructural forces behind price movements and the mechanics of the auction market.

1. What is Order Flow?

While technical analysis focuses on price charts and patterns, Order Flow is the study of the actual transaction flow that moves the market. It examines the supply and demand forces at their most granular microstructural level.

Every single price change is caused by an imbalance between buyers and sellers. Order Flow analysis looks at buy and sell market orders matching against resting limit orders in the order book.

★ Core Truth: Price cannot move unless market orders consume all available liquidity at a given price level.

2. The Transaction Engine

At the heart of every financial exchange is a matching engine. The matching engine operates like a continuous double auction, constantly processing incoming orders and filling them based on price-time priority.

By tracking order flow, traders can see institutional accumulation, spot heavy absorption of selling pressure, and identify when a breakout is backed by real capital or is just a low-liquidity sweep.

Follow the arrows: Incoming order → Matching engine → Resting liquidity → Execution record. Order matching in outline. Cancellations and quote updates can move prices without a trade, and participant identity cannot be read from order flow alone.
