Module 8: Volume AnalysisAdvanced 15 Min

Lesson 5: 8.4: Volume-Based Breakouts & Validation

Evaluate volume structures to validate breakouts, filter false moves, and spot high-probability entries.

1. Validating Breakouts with Volume

A breakout is when price crosses a major horizontal resistance level or chart pattern boundary. To be valid, a breakout MUST be accompanied by a significant expansion in volume (minimum 1.5x to 2x average volume).

The high volume confirms that institutions are actively buying the breakout and sponsoring the upward move. If price breaks out on low volume, it is highly likely a fakeout (bull trap), because there is no big money supporting the higher prices.

★ Key Concept: If a breakout fails to attract high volume, look to short the reversal back into the pattern range.

2. The Pullback and Re-test Volume Signature

After a high-volume breakout, price often pulls back to re-test the broken resistance as new support. A healthy re-test should see volume collapse to extremely low levels, indicating sellers have no momentum. When price bounces, volume should expand once again.

Price closing above resistance on high volume, pulling back to the level on low volume, then volume picking up again
A breakout and its retest. After 20 bars averaging a volume of 100, price closes at 105.50, above resistance (104), on volume of 200, 2 times the average. Price then pulls back to 104 (a low of 104 and a close of 104.40) on volume of just 50, half the average. Volume then picks up again (90, 160, 180). A rule of thumb asks for 1.5 to 2 times the average volume on a breakout, but it is a guideline, not a requirement, and low volume on a retest does not prove failure. The retest holds in this example only; nothing is guaranteed. Illustrative data.

KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE

Q01.

What is the primary indicator of a high-probability breakout that is likely to continue rather than fail?

Signal Desk is where you practice this on real stocks: real option chains (about 15 minutes delayed), the Trade Check and a paper-trading account that risks no real money. Join to add it, your progress tracking and PDF downloads.
