Lesson 1: 8.0: Volume Foundations & Institutional Footprints
Deconstruct the foundational role of trading volume, why it precedes price, and how to spot institutional footprints.
1. Volume as the Fuel of Markets
Volume is the total number of shares or contracts traded during a specific time period. It represents the liquidity and activity level of an asset.
In technical analysis, 'volume precedes price'. This means that accumulation or distribution by large institutions will show up in the volume data before causing a major price breakout or breakdown.
★ Core Rule: Price moves on high volume are highly valid and likely to continue, while price moves on low volume are fragile and prone to failure.
2. Spotting Institutional Footprints
Retail traders trade in small lots, which have no impact on volume. High-volume spikes (e.g., 2-3x the 20-period average) represent institutional blocks entering or exiting the market.
Identifying these spikes allows traders to align their trades with the 'smart money'.
