Lesson 1: 16.1: TWAP & Volume Trajectory Algorithms
Master Time-Weighted Average Price execution schedules, time slicing, and static vs dynamic volume profiles.
1. TWAP Mechanics & Time-Slicing
Time-Weighted Average Price (TWAP) algorithms divide a large parent order into equal child order slices executed at uniform time intervals (e.g., every 30 seconds) across a defined duration.
TWAP ignores volume variations, assuming a linear progression of time.
★ Anti-Gaming Randomization: Modern TWAP algorithms randomize slice sizes and execution intervals to prevent predatory HFT algorithms from detecting static algorithmic patterns.
2. Volume Trajectory Slicing
Unlike pure linear TWAP, Volume Trajectory algorithms adjust slice sizes to match anticipated intraday volume curves while maintaining strict time boundaries.

Options are contracts cleared in the bid-ask auction market. Interact with the Order Book below to understand how buy offers (bids) and sell offers (asks) intersect, and inspect the structural breakdown between Call and Put contracts.
Limit Order Book & Spread Interface
Hover over ASK or BID to dissect the auction market dynamics.
Right to Buy
- Outlook: Bullish (Goes up)
- Risk: Capped to premium paid
- Profit: Scales as stock surges
Right to Sell
- Outlook: Bearish (Goes down)
- Risk: Capped to premium paid
- Profit: Scales as stock falls
KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE
Why do production TWAP execution algorithms randomize order slice sizes and execution time intervals?
