Module 6: Chart PatternsIntermediate 15 Min

Lesson 4: 6.3: Triangle Formations

Master Symmetrical, Ascending, and Descending triangles and understand the coil mechanics of price compression.

1. Triangle Classes

Triangles represent a tightening coil where price compresses over a period of weeks or months. There are three primary types:

1. Symmetrical Triangle: Features a descending upper resistance line and an ascending lower support line. It is a neutral consolidation pattern that breakouts in the direction of the prevailing trend.

2. Ascending Triangle: Features a flat upper resistance line and an ascending lower support line. It is a highly bullish accumulation structure.

3. Descending Triangle: Features a flat lower support line and a descending upper resistance line. It is a bearish distribution structure.

A symmetrical, an ascending and a descending triangle, each with its two boundaries
Three triangle types, each squeezing price between two boundaries. Symmetrical: a falling upper line and a rising lower line. Ascending: a flat resistance (110) and rising lows. Descending: a flat support (100) and falling highs. A symmetrical triangle does not have to break in the direction of the earlier trend, and the shape alone does not say which way an ascending or descending triangle will break. Illustrative data.
