3M Company (MMM) daily chart on October 20, 2026 with EMAs, MACD, RSI and the options expected-move cone, plus technical, fundamental and volatility panels

Why MMM today

3M beat Q3 estimates (adjusted EPS $2.50 vs about $2.39 expected, up 12% from a year ago) and raised full-year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $9.10-$9.15 from $8.95-$9.10. Operating margin rose 110 basis points to 26.2%, and management expects about $700M of data-center revenue in 2026. Shares jumped about 5.7% as the Dow rallied roughly 1% and oil prices retreated.

Technical view

  • Price ($171.34) cleared its 21 EMA ($165.18), 100 EMA ($165.61) and 50 EMA ($166.76) in one session; yesterday's close ($162.01) was under all three. The three are bunched within about $1.60, so that cluster is the first thing to hold.
  • The move follows Q3 results: adjusted EPS $2.50 vs about $2.39 expected, full-year EPS guidance raised to $9.10-$9.15, and operating margin up 110 bps to 26.2%.
  • It opened at $163.00, reached $172.95 and sits near the top of that range. RSI (14) reads 59.8: firm, not overbought.
  • The chart's MACD line (1.04) is only just above its signal (0.96), histogram +0.08: momentum is turning up, but it is still a thin reading. The Stochastic (9,6) at 84 is overbought after the one-day jump.
  • Breadth is broadly positive: NYSE advancers lead about 3 to 1 (1,662 vs 526) and Nasdaq about 3 to 1 (2,373 vs 750), though Nasdaq new 52-week lows (204) still far outnumber highs (32).
  • Options Swing Helper trend bias: Neutral, HV Rank 48.9% (Fair): option premium is mid-range versus its own past year, with annualized volatility at 26.9%.
  • Volume was 4.93M at snapshot time, about 161% of its 30-day average (3.06M) with the session still open.

Market breadth and new highs / lows

  • NYSE: 1,662 advancers vs 526 decliners, roughly 3 to 1 positive. Nasdaq: 2,373 vs 750, also roughly 3 to 1.
  • About 44% of S&P 500 stocks were above their 50-day average and 50% above their 200-day at Monday's close: participation is still only about half the index.
  • S&P 500 new 52-week highs 21 vs 1 low; Nasdaq 32 highs vs 204 lows (Reuters, about 12:06 PM ET), as tech lags the blue-chip rally.

Our read: Bullish (Cautious)

The earnings beat-and-raise and the move above all three EMAs put the reading on the positive side: RSI is near 60, the chart's MACD is turning up and breadth is broadly supportive. The cautions are real too: the stock covered a lot of ground in one session, the Stochastic is overbought, the EMAs it just cleared are bunched closely, and Nasdaq new lows still far outnumber highs. The reading leans positive, with the size of today's move as the main thing to watch.
