Why INTC today
Intel rose about 5.5% on Monday after New Street Research upgraded it to Buy with a $125 target, arguing that server CPUs are in short supply. The move comes ahead of its Q3 report on October 29 after the close; RBC kept a Sector Perform rating and a $100 target but expects revenue to beat on server demand and better yields. The shares had fallen from a June high near $140 to the mid-$80s by Friday.
Technical view
- Price ($91.78) sits below its 21 EMA ($99.00), 100 EMA ($99.57) and 50 EMA ($102.07) but above its 200-day EMA (about $87.25, from daily closes). Friday's close was $86.96.
- Today's bounce follows a New Street Research upgrade to Buy ($125 target) on server-CPU scarcity. RBC kept Sector Perform ($100) but expects Q3 revenue to beat on server demand and better yields. Earnings are Oct 29, after the close.
- The stock is still about a third below its June high (near $140), and today's high ($92.09) stopped well under the moving-average cluster near $99-$102.
- RSI (14) reads 39.9: weak, but off its recent low. The chart's MACD signal line is about -4.4 with a histogram of -0.34: below zero, so momentum is still negative.
- Breadth is mildly positive: NYSE advancers lead about 1.2 to 1 (1,208 vs 971) and Nasdaq about 1.2 to 1 (1,721 vs 1,443); about 60% of S&P 500 stocks are above their 50-day average and 59% above their 200-day.
- New 52-week lows still outnumber highs on both exchanges: NYSE 64 lows vs 39 highs, Nasdaq 256 vs 66 (about 2:05 PM ET).
- Options Swing Helper trend bias: Bearish, HV Rank 22.35% (Cheap): option premium is low versus its own past year even though annualized volatility is a high 53.5%. Earnings in 3 days can change that.
- Volume was 62.69M at snapshot time, about 60% of its 30-day average (105.28M) with the session still open.
Market breadth and new highs / lows
- NYSE: 1,208 advancers vs 971 decliners, about 1.2 to 1 positive. Nasdaq: 1,721 vs 1,443, about 1.2 to 1 positive.
- About 60% of S&P 500 stocks were above their 50-day average and 59% above their 200-day (Barchart, about 1:49 PM ET): participation is a little better than half the index.
- New 52-week highs vs lows (Barchart, about 2:05 PM ET): NYSE 39 vs 64, Nasdaq 66 vs 256, so lows still lead on both exchanges.

Our read: Neutral (Cautious)
The reading is mixed. Price is above its 200-day average but below the 21, 50 and 100, the chart's MACD is below zero and RSI is near 40, while the broad market is firmer today. The bounce rests on an analyst upgrade ahead of earnings on October 29, so that report is the main event: option premium is cheap now (HV Rank 22%), but the expected move is large (about 18%). Fundamentals are the weak spot, with a Buy consensus and a $117.79 average target set against negative trailing EPS and about 53x forward earnings. The levels to watch are the moving-average cluster near $99 on the upside and Friday's close, near $87, on the downside.
