Lesson 10: 2.9: Sovereign Wealth Funds

Learn about state-owned investment funds managing national reserves derived from commodities or trade surpluses.

1. State-Owned Investment Powerhouse

Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are government-owned investment funds that manage massive pools of capital. This capital is typically generated from natural resource revenues (such as oil in Norway or Gulf nations) or chronic trade surpluses (such as in Singapore or China).

Instead of leaving these excess revenues sitting idle in central bank deposits, SWFs invest globally to build long-term generational wealth for their citizens.

★ Key Concept: Norway's Government Pension Fund Global and Singapore's GIC are among the largest SWFs in existence.

2. Long-Term Strategic Allocation

Because they are owned by nations rather than retail investors, SWFs have incredibly long-term investment horizons. They do not worry about quarterly earnings or short-term volatility.

This allows them to invest heavily in illiquid, long-term assets, such as massive infrastructure projects, private equity, and real estate, serving as a massive stabilizing anchor in global asset pricing.

A flow diagram with the boxes Resource revenues, Trade surpluses, Sovereign fund, Global investments and Long-term assets
Resource revenues and Trade surpluses feed into Sovereign fund, which leads to Global investments and then Long-term assets. Two possible sources of funds feed one sovereign fund. Not every fund has both, or the same liquidity needs, and funds do not always stabilize prices.
