Module 18: Regulatory Jurisdictions & ComplianceAdvanced 20 Min

Lesson 3: 18.3: Trade Reporting, Audit Trails, & CAT (Consolidated Audit Trail)

Master trade reporting requirements, SEC Rule 613 Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT), OATS, and clock synchronization.

1. The Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) Mandate

Under SEC Rule 613, the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) creates a single, comprehensive database tracking every order, quote, cancellation, and execution across all US national market equity and options exchanges.

Replaced legacy OATS (Order Audit Trail System) to provide regulators with complete cross-market order lifecycle visibility.

★ Clock Synchronization: Brokers and exchanges must synchronize clocks to within milliseconds (or microseconds for HFT) of NIST standard time.

2. Data Privacy & Reporting Telemetry

CAT ingests billions of daily event records, linking customer identities with exact trade execution sequences for regulatory forensics.

Order received → Routing, which then splits into Execution and Cancellation, and both lead to Linked audit trail. Examples of event types, not stages every order must go through: an order can be executed or cancelled. The scope of reporting and clock tolerances are not stated.

IV Crush Scenario Visualizer

LAB SIMULATOR ACTIVE

Implied Volatility (IV) Crush is the primary account-killer for option buyers after earnings announcements. Play with the controls below to see how option premium collapses depending on Vega.

Scenario Modeling
Trader Stance
Implied Volatility (Post-Earnings):80%
Option Vega Level:0.3
⚠️ You bought options with an inflated IV of 80%. As IV collapses down to 80%, your contract hemorrhages premium value purely from volatility erosion.
PREMIUM DECAY OUTCOME
Initial Value (80% IV)$390
Post-Crush Value$390
Resulting P&L:+$0

KNOWLEDGE RECONNAISSANCE

Q01.

What is the primary function of the SEC's Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT)?

Signal Desk is where you practice this on real stocks: real option chains (about 15 minutes delayed), the Trade Check and a paper-trading account that risks no real money. Join to add it, your progress tracking and PDF downloads.
