Why MCD today
McDonald's rose about 5.7% on Wednesday after its third-quarter report. Adjusted EPS was $3.57 (+11%; GAAP $3.51, +10%) and operating income rose 7% to $3.6 billion, while revenue of $7.16 billion (+1%) came in below expectations. Global comparable sales rose 1.5% and U.S. comparable sales fell 0.2%, with lower guest counts largely offset by higher check sizes; management said the U.S. improved as the quarter progressed after its value push. Our read: Bullish (Overbought)
The reading is bullish but stretched. Price is above its 21, 50 and 100 EMAs and just above its 200-day EMA (near $273.50), though still below the 200-day simple average near $282.62. RSI is 78.2, which is overbought, and the stock jumped about 5.7% in one session, so some of the good news is already in the price. The quarter was mixed: adjusted EPS beat and operating income grew 7%, but revenue missed, U.S. comparable sales slipped 0.2% and global comparable sales slowed to 1.5%. Thirty-three analysts rate the stock a Buy, with an average target near $292, only about 5% above the price. The Options Swing Helper shows option premium as rich (HV Rank 80.28%). The levels to watch are today's low near $267.80 and the 200-day EMA near $273.50 on the downside, and the 200-day average near $282.62 on the upside.
